Bhutan Luxury — 5 Days

Duration:

5 Days / 4 Nights

Group Size:

2–8 travelers

Difficulty:

Easy to Moderate

Five days in the last Himalayan kingdom, where Gross National Happiness is policy and fortress-monasteries preside over valleys that have changed little in centuries — experienced from five-star lodges with private guides, traditional hot-stone baths, and a dawn ascent to the cliff-hung Tiger’s Nest.

Your Bhutanese Sojourn

Day 1: Arrive Paro. The approach to Paro airport is one of the world’s most dramatic — your plane threads between peaks before touching down in a valley of terraced rice paddies and whitewashed farmhouses. Transfer to your luxury lodge, where a welcome butter-tea ceremony and a hot-stone bath set the tone. Afternoon visit to the National Museum and Paro Rinpung Dzong, a seventeenth-century fortress-monastery that still houses a community of monks.

Day 2: Thimphu. Drive to Bhutan’s capital — one of the world’s few national capitals without a traffic light. Visit the towering Buddha Dordenma statue, the textile museum, and the weekend market where farmers sell red rice, dried yak cheese, and chili peppers by the bushel. Lunch at a farmhouse restaurant where ema datshi — Bhutan’s fiery national dish of chili and cheese — is prepared before your eyes. Afternoon at the Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutanese government and the summer residence of the monastic body.

Punakha Dzong — the “Palace of Great Happiness,” standing at the meeting point of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu rivers since 1637.

Day 3: Punakha. Cross the Dochula Pass (3,100 m) where, on clear mornings, the entire eastern Himalayan chain unfolds in a white arc above 108 memorial chortens. Descend into the subtropical Punakha Valley and visit the exquisite Punakha Dzong, Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress, set at the confluence of two glacier-fed rivers. Afternoon nature walk through rice fields to the Chimi Lhakhang, a fertility temple whose ribald folk traditions contrast delightfully with the Dzong’s solemn grandeur.

Day 4: Tiger’s Nest. The defining moment of any Bhutan journey. Rise before dawn and drive to the trailhead at Paro Valley’s edge. The hike to Taktsang Monastery — the Tiger’s Nest, perched 900 meters above the valley floor — takes roughly two hours up and ninety minutes down, with a tea stop at the cafeteria viewpoint midway. Your guide recounts the legend of Guru Rinpoche, who flew to this cliff on the back of a tigress in the eighth century. Return to the lodge for a celebratory dinner of traditional Bhutanese dishes served by candlelight.

Day 5: Departure. A final morning meditation session at the lodge (optional), followed by a leisurely transfer to Paro airport.
