We travelled as a family of four — my wife, our two children, and myself — expecting a pleasant week in Nepal. What we received was something far deeper: a country that folded us into its rhythms and refused to let us leave unchanged.

Kathmandu’s Living Heritage

Our guide, Deepak, met us at the airport with marigold garlands and an infectious enthusiasm for his city’s heritage. Over three days in the Kathmandu Valley, he walked us through Durbar Square’s intricately carved wooden temples, the swirling incense of Pashupatinath, and the calm white dome of Boudhanath — where my daughter sat cross-legged beside elderly monks and watched prayer flags snap in the wind. She still talks about it at dinner.

The pacing was superb. Mornings were devoted to major sites, but afternoons were left open for wandering narrow alleys, discovering tiny courtyards, and eating momos at street stalls Deepak personally vouched for. It never felt rushed, even though the itinerary covered a remarkable amount of ground.

Pokhara and the Lake

The domestic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara was arranged seamlessly, and the lakeside hotel offered a balcony view of Machhapuchhre that made my wife tear up. We spent two days boating on Phewa Lake, visiting the Peace Pagoda at sunset, and hiking gently through terraced hillsides where farmers waved us over for tea. My son, fifteen and usually indifferent to anything not on a screen, declared it “the best place I’ve ever been.” That alone justified the trip.

Nepal is close to India geographically, but the experience felt like discovering a hidden room in a house you thought you knew completely. Deepak’s warmth and knowledge made the difference between tourism and genuine connection.

A Small Note

I give four stars rather than five only because the Kathmandu hotel, while clean and perfectly located, showed its age in the plumbing. Learn Travel’s team responded immediately when I mentioned it and offered an upgrade the following night, which speaks well of their responsiveness. Everything else — the guides, the vehicles, the flights, the restaurant choices, the small surprises — was exceptional. We will be back for the Annapurna trek once the children are older.
